Your first spa visit can start with a few simple details: the experience you have chosen, what it includes and how to prepare your day. You do not need to know every treatment or every spa's rules. Checking a few points helps you arrive feeling comfortable and ready to enjoy the visit.
Before you leave
Confirm the exact location, agreed appointment time and how long to allow for the full programme. The treatment duration may not include check-in, changing or facilities access. Ask how early to arrive, particularly if you want to use the circuit before your massage.
If you bought a voucher, bring the confirmation or the details requested by the team. An online purchase does not automatically confirm an appointment time. Our spa voucher guide explains how to prepare.
What should you bring?
- For the treatment: comfortable clothing to arrive and leave in.
- For pool or circuit access: swimwear and any items required by the spa.
- Visit confirmation: your voucher reference or booking details.
- Personal belongings: bring only what you need and check whether lockers are available.
Ask whether towels, robes, slippers and a swimming cap are provided, required or charged separately. Each spa has its own conditions. Do not assume all these items are included simply because you have bought a massage.
Treatments and circuits are different experiences
A massage does not automatically include a pool, sauna, steam room or jacuzzi. Even where access is included, facilities and time allowances vary by location and programme. Read your selected option and confirm the conditions with the team.
If you want to combine a treatment with facilities, read our guide to visiting a spa without a hotel stay. It helps distinguish a treatment appointment from a programme with circuit access.
The conversation before your massage
Tell the therapist this is your first visit. Explain your preferred pressure, areas you would like attention to and anything you would prefer to avoid. Ask how to prepare for the treatment; the team should explain the procedure and privacy arrangements before starting.
During the session, you can request a change in pressure, position or temperature. You can also ask to stop. There is no benefit in staying silent about discomfort.

After the treatment
Leave a little time before returning to your plans. Check whether you can still use the facilities and until what time. Before leaving, ask any remaining questions about the programme or a future visit, rather than assuming another spa will have the same conditions.
